The European strategy for data, adopted in February 2020, is designed to enhance the use of data across all sectors of the economy, aiming to foster innovation, economic growth, and societal progress. A key objective of the strategy is to create a single market for data, ensuring that individuals and businesses have control over their data while promoting its widespread availability for public and private use. By facilitating access to data, the strategy aims to improve areas such as healthcare, transportation, public services, and sustainability, ensuring that Europe remains competitive in the global data economy.

In addition to its broad economic impact, the strategy also benefits specific sectors like tourism, where data can play a vital role in enhancing services and improving destination management. For example, the creation of Common European Data Spaces allows businesses and public authorities to share insights and trends, optimizing resource allocation and improving visitor experiences. By encouraging collaboration and data sharing across borders, the strategy supports the development of innovative, data-driven solutions to address challenges like overcrowding and environmental sustainability in tourism.

The European strategy for data is supported by key legislative measures such as the Data Governance Act and the Data Act. These laws provide a framework for fair and secure data sharing while protecting individual rights. Additionally, the EU is investing in data infrastructure and cloud services to support secure data processing and enhance the digital capabilities of various industries. Last updated on April 4, 2024, the strategy reflects the EU's commitment to driving innovation and ensuring that data benefits society as a whole, positioning Europe as a leader in the global data economy.
