The SECreTour initiative (Sustainable, Engaging, and CREative TOURism as a driver for a better future in rural and remote areas), funded by the Horizon Europe programme of the European Commission, runs from January 2024 to December 2026. Its goal is to advance sustainable cultural tourism in Europe's peripheral regions. The project focuses on community-centred tourism, developing local strategies for sustainable cultural tourism, creating innovative business models, offering policy recommendations, and promoting inclusive and sustainable cultural and creative tourism. It also aims to enhance collaboration across Europe, especially in rural and remote areas. By prioritising local communities, SECreTour seeks to diversify income streams, enhance rural recognition, and extend services beyond cultural offerings.
