Flash Eurobarometer 498 provides an in-depth analysis of SMEs' actions towards resource efficiency and their participation in green markets within the EU and selected non-EU countries. The survey reveals that a significant majority of SMEs have implemented at least one resource efficiency measure, such as saving energy, minimising waste, or recycling. However, investment levels vary, with only a minority allocating more than 5% of their annual turnover to these initiatives. Barriers to implementing resource efficiency measures include complex administrative procedures and difficulties in adapting environmental legislation. Despite these challenges, a growing number of SMEs are offering green products or services, with many having done so for over three years. The primary market for these green offerings remains domestic, although some SMEs are expanding into international markets. The survey also highlights the need for increased support, such as financial incentives and technical consultancy, to assist SMEs in enhancing their resource efficiency and expanding their green product and service offerings.
