Volume of retail trade down by 0.5% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU

In July 2025, compared with June 2025, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade fell by 0.5% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU, according to first estimates from Eurostat.

According to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, the volume of retail trade decreased in July 2025 compared with June 2025 by 0.5% in the euro area and by 0.4% in the EU. This follows an increase in June 2025 of 0.6% in the euro area and 0.5% in the EU.

By sector, the euro area recorded a fall of 1.1% for food, drinks and tobacco, a rise of 0.2% for non-food products (excluding automotive fuel), and a drop of 1.7% for automotive fuel in specialised stores. In the EU, sales fell by 0.9% for food, drinks and tobacco, rose by 0.2% for non-food products (excluding automotive fuel), and decreased by 1.3% for automotive fuel in specialised stores.

Among the Member States for which data are available, the largest monthly decreases in total retail trade volume were observed in Croatia (-4.0%), Estonia (-2.0%) and Germany (-1.5%). The highest increases were registered in Lithuania (+1.5%), Latvia (+1.4%) and the Netherlands (+1.1%).

On an annual basis, compared with July 2024, the calendar adjusted retail sales index rose by 2.2% in the euro area and by 2.4% in the EU. In the euro area, increases were recorded for food, drinks and tobacco (+0.9%), non-food products (+3.1%), and automotive fuel (+2.3%). In the EU, rises were also seen across these categories, at +0.7%, +3.3% and +3.3% respectively.

The strongest annual increases in total retail trade volume were observed in Cyprus (+8.5%), Portugal (+6.1%) and Bulgaria (+6.0%), while Slovenia (-0.7%) was the only Member State to record a decrease.
