The Digital Europe Programme (DIGITAL) is a strategic EU funding programme dedicated to accelerating the digital transformation of Europe’s society and economy. DIGITAL focuses on bringing advanced digital technologies to businesses, citizens, and public administrations, reinforcing the EU’s digital capacities and resilience. With a total budget exceeding EUR 8.1 billion under the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021–2027, DIGITAL supports projects in key areas such as supercomputing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, advanced digital skills, and the wide uptake of digital technologies across sectors. The programme also backs the digital transformation of SMEs and public administrations through a strengthened network of European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIH). Recognising Europe’s growing digital dependencies, particularly highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the geopolitical consequences of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, DIGITAL aims to reduce vulnerabilities and enhance EU technological sovereignty. DIGITAL works in synergy with other EU funding mechanisms such as Horizon Europe, the Connecting Europe Facility, and the Recovery and Resilience Facility. It also contributes to the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP), supporting the EU’s industrial competitiveness and technological independence. Selected DIGITAL projects are awarded the STEP Seal, facilitating their access to complementary EU funding.
