EURATEX has expressed its support for the introduction of a Digital Product Passport (DPP) for apparel under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), recognising its potential to strengthen transparency, circularity and competitiveness across the European textile and apparel sector — provided it is designed in a practical and proportionate way.

As a key measure under the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles, the DPP aims to bring essential product information together in a harmonised digital format. For EURATEX, this represents a valuable opportunity to improve how data on fibre composition, durability, repairability and end‑of‑life options is shared across the value chain.

In its position, EURATEX notes that a well‑implemented DPP can support companies in meeting new regulatory requirements while also enabling better collaboration among manufacturers, brands, recyclers and consumers. By making relevant information more accessible, the DPP can help accelerate the shift towards more circular business models and more efficient recycling processes.

At the same time, EURATEX emphasises that the system must remain feasible for SMEs, which form the backbone of the European textile industry. Clear data categories, interoperability with existing tools, and strong safeguards for commercially sensitive information are identified as essential conditions for success.

EURATEX also cautions that, without careful design, the DPP risks becoming overly complex or burdensome, particularly for smaller companies. For this reason, it calls on EU institutions to work closely with industry partners to ensure a smooth rollout, supported by guidance, digital solutions and a phased implementation timeline.
