The MUSA – Multilayered Urban Sustainability Action project culminated in a two-day final event on December 3rd and 4th, 2025, in Milan, marking the conclusion of three years of research, experimentation, and collaborative innovation. Over 600 participants attended the closing sessions, reflecting the strong engagement from research communities, institutions, industry partners, and citizens across Lombardy and beyond.
MUSA was funded under the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) with the aim of creating a scalable ecosystem of innovation to address sustainability challenges at urban and regional levels. The project brought together an extensive network of stakeholders, with more than 1,000 researchers, 24 enterprises and public partners including the Municipality of Milan and the Lombardy Region, nine Living Labs and five Joint Labs contributing to its multifaceted activities.
The event offered a comprehensive overview of results achieved across technological, social and scientific dimensions. Highlights included the development of four new patents in areas such as energy, sensor systems, innovative materials and urban monitoring systems, and the launch of over 150 projects that combined ideas, prototypes and applied research across sustainability, digital transformation and social innovation.
A key moment of the event was the poster session, where participants showcased more than 150 research contributions. Attendees had the opportunity to engage directly with researchers, explore prototypes and innovative solutions, and witness the breadth of work contributing to MUSA’s multidisciplinary ecosystem.
On the second day, the six winners of the MUSA Next Generation PMI call were announced, each receiving €25,000, for a total prize fund of €150,000 to support responsible and innovative approaches by small and medium-sized enterprises. The awards highlighted the vital role of SMEs in driving sustainable innovation and strengthening ties between academia and industry.
The final event not only celebrated the achievements of the MUSA project but also set the stage for future collaborations and continued impact beyond the formal project timeline.
