The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) launched a preparatory study on textile products that will provide a scientific basis for future EU policy actions, including potential eco-design requirements, green public procurement criteria and a revision of EU Ecolabel criteria for textiles. This initiative forms part of the implementation of the Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles, aiming to support more durable, repairable, reusable and recyclable textiles across the European Union.
The preparatory study follows a structured methodology adapted for textile sustainability aspects and addresses areas such as market scope, user behaviour, technologies, environmental impacts and design options. Registered stakeholders are invited to take part in the consultation process by reviewing draft documents, attending online technical working group meetings and providing written comments. The study is progressing through milestones that include analysis of current criteria, technologies and policy options.
As part of the stakeholder engagement, the JRC has scheduled an online workshop on 14 and 15 January 2026 to discuss the third milestone of the study, which focuses on the analysis of base case scenarios and design options. After the workshop, stakeholders can submit written comments via a dedicated questionnaire between 16 January and 23 March 2026. Interested parties can register on the Product Bureau website to receive details and access consultation documents.
