Who?
The Blueprint for Tourism Climate Action Plans is intended for regional authorities and Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) across the Mediterranean. These actors play a key role in planning, managing, and transforming tourism models to make them more resilient and sustainable.
What?
The Blueprint is a practical guide that provides clear, adaptable steps to develop Climate Action Plans for tourism. It supports destinations in reducing tourism-related emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change.
Where?
The guidance is primarily tailored to the Mediterranean region, the world’s leading tourist destination and home to more than half a billion people. While designed with Mediterranean challenges in mind, the Blueprint can also be applied in other regions by adapting it to local conditions.
When?
The Blueprint was developed within the Interreg Euro-MED Community4Tourism project and published in 2023.
How?
The guide was written by the Travel Foundation, co-author of the UN Tourism-led Glasgow Declaration, and commissioned by NECSTouR and CPMR. To support its use, one on site and three online capacity-building sessions were organized to help tourism authorities and DMOs apply the methodology and start developing their own Climate Action Plans. See picture - Training Blueprint Almería_C4T.
Why it is important?
The Mediterranean is facing severe risks from climate change, which threatens its position as a global tourism leader and endangers local economies dependent on the sector. The Blueprint equips destinations with the tools and knowledge needed to accelerate climate action, build resilience, and ensure a sustainable future for tourism.
