The EU-funded METICOS project, which ran from 1 September 2020 to 31 October 2023, focused on promoting the use of smart border control technologies. The project’s findings have the potential to support the broader adoption of innovative border control solutions by both authorities and travellers, with an emphasis on operational efficiency, security, and compliance with privacy regulations.

The METICOS project, funded by the European Union and conducted from 1 September 2020 to 31 October 2023, focused on analysing perceptions of smart border technologies—such as data and biometric recognition systems—among users and border authorities, with the aim of supporting their implementation. Coordinated by the European University of Cyprus and involving 14 additional partners from 9 European countries, the project developed predictive and evaluative models for user acceptance. These models employed tools such as data analysis, virtual reality, innovative sensors, and other advanced technologies.
The project was tested and validated in operational environments through two use cases across five pilot sites located in Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, and Romania, involving actual travellers and border personnel.
