Domestic demand grows faster than international tourism in Portugal

Portugal’s tourism sector continued to expand in Q2 2026, with domestic overnight stays growing faster than international stays for the first time in more than a year.

According to Portugal’s National Statistics Institute (INE), the country recorded 9.4 million guests and 23.3 million overnight stays in the second quarter of 2026, up 2.3% and 1.2% year-on-year. Domestic overnight stays increased by 3.2%, compared with 0.5% growth in international stays, reversing the pattern seen over the previous five quarters.

Hotels and rural accommodation recorded growth, while short-term rentals declined slightly. Alentejo and the North posted the strongest regional growth, while the Algarve remained heavily reliant on UK visitors. Tourism revenue reached €2.1 billion in the quarter, up 5.2%.
