In the fourth quarter of 2023, according to Eurostat, the tourism industry employed 4.9% of all employed individuals in the EU. Among those employed in the tourism industry, 53.3% were female, while male employees constituted 46.7%. The largest segment of employment within the tourism industry was in accommodation and food service activities, accounting for 91.9% of the total employed in this sector. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, at the end of 2019, the employment rate in the tourism industry was 5.2%. However, during the pandemic, this number declined to 4.3%. Encouragingly, the level of employment in the tourism industry has been gradually recovering each year, indicating positive changes in the industry.
