In an impressive feat, 2025 emerged as another record-setting year for tourism across the European Union, with travelers clocking in nearly 3.1 billion nights in accommodations—a 2.2% increase from the previous year. According to Eurostat, this translates to an astounding 66.4 million additional nights compared to 2024, highlighting a growing appetite for exploring the diverse offerings of European destinations.
A closer look at the statistics reveals that both international and domestic travelers contributed to this tourism surge. Nights spent by international visitors jumped by 3.4% (+49.7 million), while those by domestic guests edged up by 1.1% (+16.7 million). These figures underscore an increasing global and local interest in European travel.
Spain, Italy, France, and Germany stood out as the top destinations, collectively accounting for 61.7% of the total EU overnight stays. These countries continue to attract visitors with their rich cultural heritage, picturesque landscapes, and renowned culinary scenes. On the other end of the spectrum, Luxembourg, Latvia, and Estonia recorded the lowest figures, suggesting opportunities for growth in these markets.
Month-by-month data from Eurostat further highlights that most EU countries saw an increase in tourism nights throughout 2025. Malta and Poland led the growth, experiencing jumps of 10.1% and 7.2%, respectively. However, not all saw gains; Luxembourg, Romania, and Ireland reported slight declines, indicating varying regional dynamics and challenges.
The final quarter of 2025 maintained this upward trajectory, with a notable 3.0% increase in tourism nights compared to the same period in 2024. Ireland and Malta notably outpaced others with particular spikes of 12.0% and 10.9%, while Romania and Luxembourg again saw declines.
These figures reflect ongoing shifts in travel patterns and preferences, providing valuable insights into the EU's tourism sector. As decision-makers and industry leaders analyze this data, they will be better positioned to capitalize on growth opportunities and address areas needing attention.
For a detailed dissection of these statistics and more insights into EU tourism trends, the comprehensive report by Eurostat is a resource worth exploring. It offers deeper context and analysis that could inform both tourism policy and travelers’ plans about the future of European travel.
