According to Eurostat estimates, in 2021 the average amount of food waste in the EU was 131 kg per capita and remained roughly the same compared to 2020. The countries with the largest per capita amounts of food waste and prevention were Belgium (262 kg), Denmark (230 kg) and Portugal (181 kg), while those with the smallest amounts were Sweden (86 kg), Croatia (71 kg) and Slovenia (68 kg). On average for the EU, in 2021 53.4% of food waste resulted from household activities, 21.4% from manufacturing of food products and beverages, 9.2% from restaurants and food services, 8.4% from primary food production and 6.9% from retail and other distribution of food. Compared to 2020, food waste from restaurants and food services has remained constant, indicating potential for future waste reduction.
