According to Ireland's Central Statistics Office, domestic overnight trips by Irish residents rose 3% in Q2 2026, with nights spent up 5% to 9.2 million. Holidays remained the leading purpose (48% of domestic nights), ahead of visiting friends or relatives (34%) and business travel (5%), with the Southern region (Cork, Kerry, Waterford and neighbouring counties) drawing 42% of domestic trips. Outbound trips abroad fell 3% to 4.1 million, with total nights spent abroad down to 22.6 million and average stay length shortening slightly to 5.5 nights. Most outbound nights were spent within the rest of the EU-27 (15.9 million), and holiday purposes accounted for 72% of all outbound nights.
