Based on data from the EU Tourism Dashboard in 2022, the average tourism intensity among EU countries was 6.2%. This value serves as a baseline for measuring the dependence of European destinations on tourism. However, there are notable variations across countries. Croatia and Iceland stand out with the highest levels of tourism intensity. Croatia recorded 23.3 nights spent per capita, while Iceland had 22.7 nights spent per capita. These figures potentially indicate overtourism, putting strain on local resources and making these destinations vulnerable to demand shocks. Conversely, Romania, Latvia, and Slovakia exhibit low tourism activity. This could be attributed to factors such as the destinations’ limited attractiveness or untapped potential for tourism development.
