Climate change is increasingly shaping the future of tourism, prompting European destinations to seek effective adaptation tools. To aid this effort, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) will co-host a special event during European Climate Pact Week 2026 titled “Building Climate-Resilient Destinations: Integrating Climate Indicators into Sustainability Standards.” Scheduled for 26 March 2026 in Brussels, the event will gather policymakers, destination managers, tourism businesses, and sustainability experts to discuss how tourism can support Europe’s climate goals and enhance resilience to environmental issues.
Participants will examine ways to incorporate climate mitigation, risk assessment, and adaptation indicators into sustainability standards. The discussions will focus on challenges such as extreme weather, biodiversity loss, and infrastructure vulnerability, which are increasingly affecting European tourism destinations.
The event features presentations and panels with representatives from the GSTC, the Puglia Region, EU organisations, destination management bodies, and tourism companies. It will also showcase how updates to the GSTC Destination Standard can better align with European climate priorities and facilitate practical climate solutions.
For European tourism, these discussions are especially pertinent. Climate change already affects travel habits, seasonal patterns, and destination management. Therefore, tourism stakeholders must enhance their capacity to reduce emissions and adapt to climate impacts. Destination management organisations, in particular, are vital for translating EU climate policies into local action, ensuring that tourism supports resilient communities and ecosystems.
The event emphasises the importance of collaborative approaches. By involving local authorities, tourism businesses, residents, and visitors, destinations can craft more comprehensive climate strategies that balance environmental sustainability with economic growth.
As the EU advances initiatives such as the European Climate Pact, the Adaptation Strategy, and new climate targets, tourism is gaining recognition as a key sector for climate action. Events like this offer destinations and tourism professionals a chance to share knowledge, exchange best practices, and foster cooperation across Europe. Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) will co-host a special event during European Climate Pact Week 2026 titled “Building Climate-Resilient Destinations: Integrating Climate Indicators into Sustainability Standards.”
The event will take place on 26 March 2026 in Brussels, bringing together policymakers, destination managers, tourism businesses and sustainability experts to discuss how tourism can align with Europe’s climate objectives and strengthen resilience to environmental challenges.
Participants will explore how tourism destinations can integrate climate mitigation, risk assessment and adaptation indicators into sustainability standards. Discussions will address challenges such as extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, and infrastructure vulnerability, which are increasingly affecting tourism destinations across Europe.
The programme will include presentations and panel discussions featuring representatives from the GSTC, the Puglia Region, EU organisations, destination management organisations and tourism businesses. The event will also highlight how ongoing updates to the GSTC Destination Standard can better align with European climate priorities and help destinations implement practical climate solutions.
For European tourism, the discussion is particularly relevant. Climate change is already influencing travel patterns, seasonality and destination management strategies. Tourism stakeholders must therefore strengthen their capacity to both reduce emissions and adapt to climate impacts. Destination management organisations, in particular, play a crucial role in translating EU climate policies into local action, ensuring tourism contributes to resilient communities and ecosystems.
The event also highlights the importance of collaborative approaches. By bringing together local authorities, tourism businesses, residents and visitors, destinations can develop more comprehensive climate strategies that balance environmental protection with economic development.
As the EU advances initiatives such as the European Climate Pact, the Adaptation Strategy and new climate targets, tourism is increasingly recognised as an important sector for climate action. Events like this provide an opportunity for destinations and tourism professionals to exchange knowledge, learn about best practices and strengthen cooperation across Europe.
