Once known for its overcrowded streets during peak tourism seasons, Dubrovnik has successfully reimagined itself as a model for sustainable tourism, with a focus on preserving its cultural heritage and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.

Through a combination of strategic governance, digital tools, and community engagement, Dubrovnik launched the "Respect the City" program and the first UNESCO World Heritage Management Plan in Croatia, both pivotal in driving long-term sustainability. The city’s success is underscored by a notable achievement of being named the European Capital and Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism in 2026.

Key innovations such as the Dubrovnik Pass and smart transport solutions have dramatically reduced congestion, improved visitor safety, and aligned with the European Green Deal. With impressive reductions in vehicle traffic and new sustainable mobility initiatives, Dubrovnik demonstrates how smart technologies can facilitate people-centered policies and create more equitable tourism benefits.
