As of April 10, 2026, the European Union has implemented its advanced Entry/Exit System at nearly all external border crossing points, excluding Cyprus and Ireland. This automated IT system is designed to register non-EU nationals traveling for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period, eliminating the need for manual passport stamping.
By recording passport details, biometric data, and entry and exit information, the system significantly reduces wait times and facilitates efficient border management. This development improves security by granting authorities critical traveler insights and helps prevent irregular migration. Having been phased in since October 2025, the system is now fully operational, marking a significant step forward in modernizing EU border controls.
