The Partnership for Active Travel and Health (PATH) is urging national governments to make walking and cycling central to their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) ahead of COP30. Enabling more people to move actively and safely is highlighted as a fast, affordable and impactful way to cut emissions, improve public health and create more inclusive societies. Civil society organisations are invited to join the call by signing an open letter: https://pathforwalkingcycling.com/cop30/take

As the world looks towards COP30, PATH warns that current climate commitments fall short of what is needed to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. Research from the organisation shows that transport remains one of the fastest-growing sources of emissions. While walking and cycling are proven, low-cost solutions, they are often overlooked in national climate plans.

PATH stresses that making active travel a priority can help halve transport emissions by 2030 while also delivering wider benefits: cleaner air, healthier communities, safer streets and more vibrant cities. Examples from countries such as Brazil, Cambodia, and Lesotho demonstrate what is possible when governments adopt ambitious targets, secure funding, and integrate active travel into their national strategies.

The call is clear: governments must submit updated NDCs that embed walking and cycling as core climate solutions. This includes setting measurable targets, financing safe and inclusive infrastructure, and ensuring that mobility systems reduce inequalities while supporting sustainable growth.

PATH also invites non-profit and civil society organisations to support the campaign. By signing the open letter, organisations can join a global movement pressing governments to act decisively on active travel: https://pathforwalkingcycling.com/cop30/take

This appeal underscores that COP30 is not just another climate summit, but a great opportunity to redefine mobility. By embracing walking and cycling, governments can achieve climate goals faster while building healthier and more resilient societies.
