Visit Sweden has launched a new global campaign inviting travellers to apply for the chance to become custodians of one of five Swedish islands for a year. The initiative promotes a new vision of luxury centred on silence, nature and balance rather than exclusivity. The campaign highlights Sweden’s strong commitment to sustainable tourism and nature-based experiences, positioning the country as a leading destination for responsible and low-impact travel.

The new Your Swedish Island campaign by Visit Sweden offers international travellers a unique opportunity to experience life close to nature. Rather than traditional luxury, the campaign focuses on time, space, and simplicity, inviting selected participants to serve as temporary custodians of one of five islands for one year. The initiative aims to share a Swedish perspective on freedom, responsibility and respect for nature, encouraging visitors to engage deeply with landscapes and local culture.

Sweden is home to more islands than any other country in the world, with over 267,000 islands forming diverse and often untouched natural environments. Through this campaign, the national tourism organisation seeks to highlight the country’s outdoor lifestyle and the importance of the Right of Public Access, which allows people to explore nature while respecting ecosystems and communities.

The programme does not offer ownership; instead, it promotes stewardship. Selected participants will receive the right to use an island for a year while committing to responsible and sustainable behaviour. This includes caring for nature, minimising environmental impact and sharing their experience to inspire others. Applications are based on creativity and motivation, and candidates are invited to submit video proposals explaining why they wish to participate.

From a tourism perspective, the campaign reflects a broader shift in travel demand. Many travellers increasingly seek authentic, slow and meaningful experiences connected to nature and wellbeing. Initiatives such as Your Swedish Island support this trend by promoting mindful travel, dispersing visitors across regions and encouraging longer stays. It also reinforces Sweden’s positioning as a destination focused on sustainability, health and regenerative tourism.

For European tourism, the campaign offers an inspiring example of innovative destination marketing that aligns with climate goals and changing visitor expectations. By redefining luxury as tranquillity and connection with nature, destinations can move beyond mass tourism models and create high-value experiences that support local communities and ecosystems.

The initiative also highlights the growing importance of storytelling, creativity and experiential tourism in attracting global audiences. Campaigns that combine emotional engagement with sustainability values are becoming essential tools for European destinations competing in a crowded international market.
