Tourism starts with travel. Once tourists have chosen their destination, their very first step is to figure out how to get there. Sometimes it’s the opposite – they pick a location based on the transport options available. It follows that sustainable tourism can only start from sustainable travel choices. This belief is at the core of Trainline’s mission.

Rail offers travellers a greener alternative to flying or driving. Rail and coach also connect people to remote regions, outside the areas served by airports. This means that Trainline can support government efforts to encourage sustainable travel and complement local initiatives to attract tourists to lesser-known destinations.

Local partnerships for greener travel builds on the belief that sustainable tourism cannot be achieved in isolation, but must result from cooperation between private and public actors. We believe the global tourism challenge can be addressed with local solutions.

The campaign focuses on two objectives:

  1. Help public authorities understand tourism flows, to better incorporate sustainable travel in their activities

  2. Support initiatives promoted by national and local organizations, aimed at enhancing sustainable travel options

Objective 1 will be achieved through regular analysis and reporting on travel habits, leveraging Trainline’s market and customer insights. Objective 2 will materialize through direct exchange with authorities and organizations, who will suggest the initiatives that best address their specific needs. The focus will initially be on Trainline’s main markets (France, Spain, Italy) with plans to expand beyond this region by 2028.

Examples of completed deliverables:

  • White Paper exploring the role of rail in making tourism more sustainable in Italian cities, with a focus on international travel
  • Regular data collection (customer surveys, studies) on travel trends and habits, shared with media and public authorities
  • Collaboration with the South Tyrol tourism agency to promote rail connections, making it easier for tourists to travel by rail to the Alpine areas
  • Support the initiative of the city of Florence to encourage rail travel and share best practices for low-impact urban tourism
  • Collaboration with the Spanish association Spain by Train, bringing together all the cities served by Spain’s high-speed rail network to support sustainable tourism
