A new online self-assessment tool, created as part of the Interreg Euro-MED project Regenera4MED, allows destinations and tourism stakeholders to assess their advancement in regenerative tourism. Instead of emphasizing certification or compliance, the tool promotes reflection on aspects such as relationships, governance, community involvement, and the overall health of a destination as a dynamic system.

As Europe's interest in regenerative tourism expands, destinations seek practical tools to turn principles into action. The Regenerative Tourism Journey Self-Assessment Tool (RTJ Tool), an online platform, aims to help stakeholders measure their progress toward regeneration. Created within the Regenera4MED project, co-funded by the Interreg Euro-MED Programme, this tool adopts a different approach from traditional sustainability assessments. Instead of focusing on compliance, technical metrics, or environmental indicators, it emphasises the quality of relationships within a destination and how tourism supports the vitality of local ecosystems, communities, and cultures.
The self-assessment encourages participants to reflect on their connection with a place—its people, nature, heritage, and tourism system. In doing so, it aims to uncover how individuals and organisations see their role within the destination and how their actions influence its long-term growth. Importantly, the tool is not designed as an audit or certification process. Instead, it serves as a developmental and reflective exercise that helps destinations better understand the factors that support regenerative tourism. The focus is on learning, awareness, and collective change rather than on scoring performance.
The methodology was co-created by academics, tourism practitioners and experts in regenerative development and systems thinking. It is based on the idea that destinations should be understood as living systems, in which environmental, social, cultural, and economic dimensions are interconnected and constantly evolving. For destination management organisations, local authorities, tourism businesses and community groups, the tool provides a structured way to initiate conversations about the future of tourism. It can help identify strengths, reveal blind spots and encourage a more holistic understanding of tourism's role within a territory.
The self-assessment forms part of the broader Regenerative Tourism Blueprint, a knowledge platform that brings together practical guidance, governance models, and implementation tools to support destinations moving beyond traditional sustainability approaches. The Blueprint promotes tourism that actively contributes to the regeneration of ecosystems, local economies and communities rather than simply reducing negative impacts. The initiative is being tested in pilot territories across the Mediterranean region, including Catalonia (Spain), Liguria and Abruzzo (Italy), Crete (Greece), Corsica (France), and Split-Dalmatia County (Croatia). Through these pilot areas, the project is exploring how regenerative principles can be applied in different tourism contexts and governance systems.
Finally, the Regenerative Tourism Journey Self-Assessment Tool offers destinations an opportunity to pause, reflect and better understand their own transformation process. Rather than providing a final answer, it encourages an ongoing journey of learning and adaptation—one that could help shape the future of tourism in Europe and beyond.
