Tourism in the Mediterranean is facing increasing pressures from climate change, resource overuse, and environmental degradation. To address these challenges, Regenera4MED promotes a regenerative tourism model that seeks not only to preserve but also to renew ecosystems, cultural heritage, and local well-being actively. The project has a duration of 33 months and a total budget of over €2.4 million, bringing together regional and local partners from across southern Europe.
Regenera4MED’s work revolves around several main pillars. It will test regenerative tourism approaches in six pilot regions—Catalonia, Liguria, Abruzzo, Crete, Corsica, and Split Dalmatia—by developing tourism experiences that contribute positively to the environment and communities. Local stakeholders will co-design regenerative experiences that support heritage conservation, inclusive growth and the vitality of local economies. In addition, the project will deliver practical tools and resources, including a Regenera4MED Blueprint and the RISET digital tool, to help destinations assess and improve their sustainability performance.
Expected results include Local Strategic Plans for regenerative tourism in each pilot region, a guide to EU funding opportunities, and a total of 13 co-created regenerative experience proposals. By applying a quintuple helix governance model that involves public authorities, private actors, academia, communities and environmental organisations, Regenera4MED aims to make its outcomes lasting and replicable.
