Gaia-X is a privately funded, not-for-profit European association, established in 2021, that brings together industry, academia and public bodies to build common standards for transparent, interoperable data infrastructure - the governance layer that manufacturing-specific initiatives such as Manufacturing-X and the automotive sector's Catena-X are built on top of.

Gaia-X does not sell or operate a platform itself; its role is closer to setting a shared rulebook so that data spaces built by different companies, sectors and countries can still work together rather than fragmenting into incompatible silos. Most manufacturers engage with Gaia-X's standards indirectly, through a sector-specific data space or a managed-service provider, rather than joining the association directly.
