At its General Assembly Economic Committee meeting in Basel on 9 June 2026, CECIMO reported that European machine tool production fell by around 6.6% in 2025, to an estimated EUR 23.5 billion, with Europe's share of world machine tool production dropping to about 30.8%, almost two percentage points lower than in 2024.

Machine tool builders are not a peripheral supplier group to this ecosystem - they make the equipment that everything else here gets manufactured on, so a sustained loss of European market share in this specific segment is a leading indicator worth watching closely, not just a general economic statistic. Domestic orders across the CECIMO8 countries declined for a third consecutive year, while foreign orders grew for the first time in two years, a mixed signal CECIMO reads as a possible stabilisation rather than a full recovery. CECIMO projects a modest improvement in production, consumption and order levels for 2026, but flags this outlook as fragile, while pointing to defence, aerospace, electrification and AI-related demand for high-precision manufacturing as the areas most likely to support a genuine turnaround.
