The news concerns the European Union’s proposal for Horizon Europe 2028-2034twice bigger, simpler, faster and more impactful, a long-term EU research & innovation programme, which was released on 16 July 2025.

The main content of relevance for the actors involved in agri-food might be of interest for the following reasons:

  • The budget doubling to €175 billion

  • Simplification: reducing the number of topics, faster grant signature.

  • The four pillars: “Excellent Science”, “Competitiveness and Society”, “Innovation”, “European Research Area”.  “Competitiveness and Society” covers industry, clean transition, and digital leadership.

  • Expansion of European Innovation Council (EIC), focus on high-risk disruptive projects and defence/dual-use startups.

This programme is intended for:

  • Researchers and scientists in Europe

  • Universities and research institutions

  • Innovators and technology startups

  • EU policy makers and institutions

  • Industry actors involved in R&D and innovation

  • Funding bodies (public and private) interested in research and innovation in the EU
