Spain's food waste falls 19% since 2020, though fruit and vegetables remain most discarded

Spain's 2025 Annual Food Waste Report finds total food waste reached 1,129.91 million kilos or litres last year, a slight 0.4% increase on 2024 but a 19.2% reduction since 2020. Households account for 97.5% of the total, with fresh fruit (32.4%) and vegetables (13.8%) remaining the most frequently discarded unused products.

Waste outside the home, covering restaurants, shops and businesses, fell more sharply, down 20.4% since 2020 to 28.12 million kilos or litres, representing 2.5% of the national total. The Ministry points to Spain's 2025 Law on the Prevention of Food Loss and Waste as a driver of this progress, and recommends better shopping and menu planning, accurate portion sizing and proper food storage as key household measures, alongside continued efforts to clarify the difference between use-by and best-before dates.
