Marking World Food Safety Day 2026, EFSA has underlined the importance of science in preventing foodborne diseases and protecting public health. The agency points to the significant global impact of unsafe food, which continues to cause widespread illness, long-term health consequences, and economic harm.

EFSA’s contribution focuses not only on the number of foodborne disease cases, but also on their severity and wider social and economic effects. This broader scientific perspective strengthens the foundation for prevention, risk assessment, and policymaking across the European Union, in line with EFSA’s One Health approach.

To support communication around this year’s event, EFSA has also made a range of ready-to-use materials available through its #Safe2Eat campaign, helping partners across Europe promote clear and consistent food safety messages.
