The EU industrial strategy was updated in May 2021 to ensure the EU industrial ambition takes account of the circumstances following the COVID-19 crisis, while ensuring EU industry can lead the way in transitioning to a green, digital and resilient economy.

In March 2020 the Commission presented a new strategy to help Europe's industry lead the twin transitions towards climate neutrality and digital leadership. The strategy aims to drive Europe's competitiveness and its strategic autonomy at a time of moving geopolitical plates and increasing global competition.
The strategy includes an SME strategy that aims to reduce red tape and help Europe's SMEs to do business across the single market and beyond, access financing, and help lead the way on the digital and green transitions.
The European industrial strategy of May 2021 had the following key elements still valid today:
- Advanced technologies for industry support and tools
- Industrial applications of artificial intelligence and big data
- Strategic Policy Forum on Digital Entrepreneurship
Industrial policy dialogue and expert advice
- Intellectual property action plan implementation
- Enforcement of intellectual property rights
- Patent protection in the EU
- Trade mark protection in the EU
- Industrial design protection
- Geographical indications for craft and industrial products
- Trade secrets
- IP and SMEs
