EIT Food has selected 18 companies for its 2026 RisingFoodStars cohort, restructuring the programme from an accelerator into a verification-based recognition meant to signal commercial readiness to investors. A third of the cohort works on alternative proteins, alongside functional ingredients, circular sidestream valorisation, and digital and regenerative agriculture.

The reframing responds to Europe's scaleup gap: EIT Food cites EU policy data showing nearly 30% of European unicorns relocated abroad between 2008 and 2021, and that only 8% of global scaleups are based in Europe. Companies are now assessed on leadership, commercial model, operational readiness and growth potential, with those passing review receiving a Scaleup Verification Badge and access to EIT Food's funding mechanisms, investor network and industry introductions.
Since launching, RisingFoodStars has worked with 178 scaleups, which have collectively raised over €930 million and created more than 1,233 jobs. For 2026, the programme adds dedicated support for expansion outside Europe, including market-entry strategy and regulatory navigation.
