An 18-partner EIP-AGRI Operational Group in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria is developing a joint sustainability assessment for milk and beef production, connecting existing data on animal health, emissions and carcass quality that currently sit in separate systems. To document animal welfare and environmental performance, the project offers a way to meet these demands without duplicating data collection.

The project, SüdRind4Klima, is testing greenhouse gas balances on 30 pilot farms using a Bavarian climate-check method, with 10 farms undergoing deeper environmental and economic analysis. Rather than building a standalone tool, the consortium is integrating sustainability modules directly into platforms farmers already use, including the Qualifood system for beef and the LKV/RDV herd manager for dairy, alongside a planned AI-supported visualisation and traffic-light presentation of results.
Backed by €597,500 in CAP Strategic Plan support, the project connects breeding, health, marketing and research organisations that each hold only part of the evidence base needed for a full sustainability picture, offering a transferable model for other member states facing similar data fragmentation in livestock supply chains.
