New Irish research project to test long-term effectiveness of methane-reducing feed additives in beef cattle

Teagasc, University College Dublin and the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute have launched RU-MIT-LESS, a project testing whether methane-reducing feed additives keep working once cattle move from indoor trials to pasture. Existing data shows emission cuts of 8-30% indoors, but pasture performance remains untested.

Methane-reducing feed additives cut emissions by 8-30% in controlled indoor trials, but whether that holds on pasture, the dominant system for Irish and EU beef producers, remains an open question. RU-MIT-LESS, led by Teagasc with UCD and AFBI, sets out to close that gap by testing additives across the production cycle and developing wearable technology to measure methane output in the field.

The project will also assess how additives affect farm profitability and what barriers stand in the way of uptake, giving farmers and policymakers evidence on which methane-mitigation approaches work outside the laboratory.
