For authorities, Destination Management Organizations (DMOs), and other organisations, as well as entrepreneurs in the tourism sector, data-driven decision-making has practical applications ranging from optimising resource allocation and improving visitor experiences to forecasting trends and driving sustainable growth. By leveraging data, these stakeholders can make more informed, effective decisions that enhance their operational efficiency and competitive edge in the market.

Mapping Initiatives and Frameworks for Sustainable Tourism Statistics

The European Union's tourism industry, comprising 2.3 million small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and employing 12.3 million people, significantly contributes to the economy, accounting for 10% of the GDP. However, this sector's intensive resource consumption and waste generation underscore the critical need to measure and enhance its sustainability. Over the years, both international and European bodies have made concerted efforts to create guidelines and frameworks for this purpose. Notably, the UN's Statistical Framework for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism (MST) provides an internationally agreed reference for assessing the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of tourism. Complementing this, the European Commission's Transition Pathway for Tourism aims to incorporate key sustainability indicators into harmonised data collection practices, thereby fostering data-driven decision-making across the EU.
Several key initiatives support these goals. The Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism commits signatories to halving emissions by the next decade and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, despite the complexities in measuring indirect effects and aviation emissions. Meanwhile, the EU Tourism Dashboard, developed in collaboration with member states, monitors the green and digital transition of the tourism sector through a comprehensive set of indicators covering environmental, digital, and socio-economic aspects. The ongoing efforts reflect a unified commitment to creating long-term, effective tools for sustainable tourism, ensuring that the industry not only thrives economically but also contributes positively to environmental and social goals.
