The European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism is an EU competition led by the European Commission, designed to acknowledge and reward smaller European destinations that have implemented effective strategies for boosting sustainable tourism through green transition efforts. Among the seven countries recognized for the 2025 competition is Nea Propontida, Greece. This coastal destination is noted for its progress in environmental conservation and efforts to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors. Nea Propontida has introduced innovative solutions like photovoltaic LED lighting and smart bus stops to cut down on energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The community’s dedication to sustainability is evident through projects such as urban beekeeping with the ‘BeePathNet’ initiative and comprehensive educational programs.
