From August 2021 to September 2022, Destination Bornholm's Winter Island Project, spearheaded by ECTN, has transformed Bornholm into a digitally smart travel destination, achieving a remarkable 144% increase in Danish overnight stays during the winter of 2021-2022. This initiative, based in Destination Bornholm ApS, has not only supported local businesses and the community during the COVID-19 pandemic but also significantly boosted revenue from 47 Mio. DKK to 72 Mio. DKK. Historically known as the "Sunshine Island," Bornholm has traditionally been a summer destination, but efforts by Destination Bornholm ApS, in collaboration with local partners, have extended the tourist season to include spring and autumn, fostering economic and social stability and growth. This project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, highlights the importance of smart tourism development in enhancing local economies and communities.
