A flexible trailing-edge system made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) has been developed to reduce low-frequency noise from wind turbine blades. The technology addresses a growing challenge as larger turbines are deployed to increase renewable electricity generation.

The system uses flexible serrations at the blade’s trailing edge to influence airflow and reduce noise directly at the source, while maintaining aerodynamic performance. It can also be retrofitted to existing turbines with relatively limited downtime.
Tests recorded noise reductions of around 3 to 6 decibels, corresponding to a substantial decrease in acoustic energy. This could help reduce the need for nighttime operating restrictions in areas where turbine noise is a concern.
