Initially established to manage disruption caused by major infrastructure works, Smart Ways to Antwerp evolved into a comprehensive regional platform promoting sustainable travel behaviour. Through collaboration between public and private partners and digital tools such as its multimodal route planner, the initiative supports employers, mobility providers and residents with tailored solutions.

Successive EU-funded projects have expanded their reach and capabilities to include freight and logistics, mobility hubs, regional cooperation and more accessible digital services. These projects strengthened governance arrangements and local partnerships, supporting continuity beyond individual funding periods.

Currently, cycling has overtaken the car as the principal commuting mode for Antwerp residents, reflecting a broader shift towards sustainable transport. Despite years of major construction work, the city has remained accessible, demonstrating how complementary EU projects can support long-term urban mobility transformation.
