This picture shows a modern building façade surrounded by dense green landscaping and a paved walkway.

The New European Bauhaus has opened a Horizon Europe call for innovative solutions that make sustainable and beautiful use of the unused or underused vertical space above buildings and streets. The aim is to improve the availability and affordability of housing and/or to provide more green spaces.

Demand for housing, and therefore for land, can conflict with the need to protect nature and biodiversity in neighborhoods. Solutions such as urban vertical farming, rooftop community gardens and vertical extensions can help limit urban sprawl. Proposals must develop and demonstrate at least one such solution, integrate circularity principles and assess its environmental, social and economic impacts over its life cycle. They must also address regulatory, technical and societal barriers and involve the local community through a participatory approach.

The topic (HORIZON-NEB-2026-01-REGEN-03) is funded under Horizon Europe Innovation Actions, with a budget of €15 million. The deadline for applications is 1 December 2026 at 17:00 CET.
