On 6-7 February 2025, EBC met with partners of the Horizon Europe BIO4EEB project in Naples to review progress on bio-based insulation materials. Hosted by SOPHIA High Tech and STARCELL, the meeting assessed advancements made in the first 2 years.

BIO4EEB focuses on sustainable insulation using non-hazardous materials like Posidonia seaweed and bio-based foams to enhance building energy efficiency and tackle material shortages. Discussions covered technical progress, business models, and upcoming demonstration activities in Italy, Spain, Lithuania, and France.

Led by 3L Architects (Germany), the meeting emphasised transitioning from material development to real-world applications. AIMPLAS (Spain) and Bouygues (France) presented improvements in fire resistance and cost-effectiveness of bio-based panels. A dedicated session explored commercialisation strategies, ensuring regulatory compliance and industry adoption.

Participants toured SOPHIA High Tech’s facilities, showcasing cutting-edge manufacturing and testing capabilities with potential applications in construction.

EBC plays a vital role in ensuring BIO4EEB solutions align with SME needs, making sustainable insulation accessible to small construction companies. The next phase will focus on testing and real-world validation stay tuned for updates on these innovative, eco-friendly solutions!
