The Horizon Europe project SWIFT-BUILD (Swarm-based Inverted Fabrication for Timber Buildings) is developing robotics and artificial intelligence technologies for the construction of timber structures. Coordinated robotic systems will be used to assemble buildings through an inverted construction process, where structures are built from the top-down using ground-based robotic assemblers and lifting units.
The project has received €4 million in EU funding under the European Innovation Council (EIC) for the autonomous construction of a multi-storey timber pavilion and large structural modules for other building applications, running from October 2026 to September 2029. the project is coordinated by the University of Bristol and involves research partners from Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
