The JustReno project, led by the Buildings Performance Institute Europe (BPIE), focuses on promoting a socially just decarbonisation of buildings in Hungary, Poland, and Romania. Its primary objective is to support the implementation of European Union building renovation policies while ensuring that vulnerable households and the worst-performing buildings are prioritised. By doing so, the project addresses both energy efficiency and social equity, helping to reduce energy poverty and emissions simultaneously.

JustReno aligns with key EU policies, including the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), the Energy Efficiency Directive (EED), and the Social Climate Fund (SCF) regulation. These policies establish binding renovation targets, call for local heating and cooling strategies, and emphasise the need for energy efficiency improvements specifically for households at risk. Effective implementation is crucial to achieving the EU’s climate goals, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe, where building energy performance is often low.

The project strengthens the capacity of policymakers and municipalities by providing technical support, knowledge-sharing events, and workshops. It helps identify poorly performing buildings, plan financially viable renovations, and foster cooperation between local and national authorities. Running from 2025 to 2026 under the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) and funded by Germany’s BMUKN, JustReno ensures that building renovations reducr emissions while improving living conditions for vulnerable populations.
