The European Alliance for Apprenticeships (EAfA) has released a new factsheet showcasing how apprenticeship schemes can foster the development of basic skills among learners. These skills - including literacy, numeracy, scientific, digital, and citizenship competences - are essential for both professional success and personal development.

Employers value apprentices who demonstrate strong basic skills, as they tend to be more capable, confident, and adaptable. At a broader level, improving these skills supports Europe’s economic competitiveness and social cohesion. Yet, evidence shows that learners in vocational education and training (VET), including apprenticeships, often face greater difficulties in these areas compared to peers in general education.

As the green and digital transitions reshape the European labour market, ensuring that all learners possess strong foundational competences is increasingly critical.

The EAfA factsheet highlights several practical approaches to strengthening basic skills within apprenticeship systems:

  • Integrating basic skills training into initial VET programmes and pre-apprenticeship pathways;

  • Embedding targeted support for adults with low skills directly in the workplace;

  • Using learner-centred teaching methods;

  • Accurately assessing learnersneeds;

  • Promoting effective collaboration between VET providers and employers.

By presenting good practices from across Europe, the factsheet provides actionable insights for policymakers, training providers, and businesses seeking to reinforce the quality and inclusiveness of apprenticeships.

This initiative contributes to the European Commission’s “Union of Skills” objective - empowering individuals through lifelong learning and strengthening Europe’s social and economic resilience.
