According to a Eurostat article from July 2024, which examines the quality of life in urban areas of the EU and highlights the benefits and challenges faced by urban residents, tourism presents a paradox. In some destinations, an increasing number of tourists can lead to congestion and saturation, potentially harming the atmosphere and local culture that initially made these places attractive. Venice (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain) are prime examples of this. Conversely, in other destinations, a growing number of tourists can generate income that may be used to redevelop and regenerate urban and rural areas.
For more detailed insights on the quality of life across urban and rural areas in Europe from various perspectives, including transport, health, education, cultural and sports facilities, safety, and environmental concerns, please follow the attached link on the left-hand side of the platform.
