According to a Eurostat article based on data collected in 2022, tourism in Europe generated an estimated EUR 572 billion in gross value added in 2019, accounting for 4.5% of the total gross value added in the EU economy. However, the COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant decline, with tourism gross value added dropping by EUR 184 billion in 2020, a 32% decrease compared to 2019.
