In 2022, Eurostat reported that out of 1 billion trips taken by EU residents, 85.1% were by land, 13.6% by air, and 1.3% by waterways. Among land-based trips, railways accounted for 15.3%, passenger road vehicles for approximately 78.1%, and buses and coaches for 4.9%. Comparing this to 2021, where only 8.0% of trips were by air and 91.2% by land, and to 2019 (when trips peaked), with 16.0% by air and 82.5% by land, it’s evident that air travel has seen a recovery in 2022.
