Production and recycling of battery material in Schwarzheide, Germany: we are the first company to establish a co-located battery materials and recycling center and close the loop in the European battery value chain. Our proprietary production technologies will allow for significantly reduced carbon footprint for of cathode active materials. On June 29, 2023, BASF has inaugurated its cathode active materials production plant in Schwarzheide, Germany. The new plant is not only the first production facility for high-performance cathode active materials in Germany, but also the first fully automated large-scale cathode active materials production facility in Europe. The produced cathode active material enables the supply for approx. 20 GWh cell capacity per year with BASF battery materials. The plant is fully sold out for the next years and will supply products tailored to the specific needs of cell manufacturers and automotive OEMs in Europe. Its modular design and infrastructure allow for the rapid scale-up of manufacturing capacities enabling BASF to meet increasing customer demand for the European EV market. Construction of the cathode active materials plant started in August 2020.
