In 2014, Fertilizers Europe introduced the Carbon Footprint Calculator (CFC) to assess greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with selected fertilizer products. This tool employs a "cradle to gate" approach, accounting for emissions at every stage of the product's production life cycle. Both direct and indirect emissions from energy supply are considered, and the tool allows for comparisons with regional references. Fertilizers Europe has also collaborated with the Carbon Trust to create a certification scheme, ensuring that results obtained with the CFC tool are endorsed, and these certified footprints can be used as input for carbon footprint calculators in food production, such as the Cool Farm Tool. Next year the scheme will be expanded to include new production pathways, like fertilizers produced from RFNBO hydrogen and biomethane. The tool is free and open to any user who wishes to estimate their fertilizer product’s carbon footprint.
