IFRA and its members are engaged to the joint Sustainability Charter (https://ifra-iofi.org/) with the flavour industry. The Charter focuses on five commitments, including responsible sourcing, reduction of our industries’ environmental footprint, and being at the leading edge of product safety. It covers tools to help companies adopt a more sustainable approach to the development of ingredients and mixtures. For instance, a “toolbox” for IFRA and IOFI members that do not have dedicated expertise on carbon footprint has been created. It provides guidance on CO2 calculation methods as well as information on common standards, such as those developed by Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and on product-level measures and standards (such as the EU’s Product Environmental Footprint and ISO standards). The IFRA-IOFI Sustainability Charter is updated on a regular basis (generally bi-annual basis) with an accompanying report on progress. The second report published in June 2023 shows that IFRA and IOFI have worked together to explore even more ways to support best practices through a range of projects and initiatives.
