In November 2024, UN Tourism announced the Best Tourism Villages 2024, recognising 55 rural communities for their excellence in sustainable tourism and community development. These villages, selected from over 260 applications across more than 60 UN Tourism Member States, are celebrated for preserving cultural and natural heritage, promoting local traditions, and fostering economic and social sustainability.

In Europe, 14 destinations were recognised in countries such as Austria, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Türkiye, and Ukraine. By establishing a network of Best Tourism Villages, UN Tourism aims to boost the visibility of rural destinations, attract more visitors and investments, create opportunities for sustainable growth, and provide a platform for knowledge sharing and capacity building to help other villages and rural destinations adopt similar strategies.
